I was in New York City last month for maybe 24 hours total working an event for Bastille Week and had about 1 hour out of 24 to myself. While most people would probably spend that hour freshening up in their Thompson Hotel room before going back out, I had other plans. Not big plans, but Bao plans.
Yes, I hailed a cab and had him take me straight to 238 W. 14th Street, also known as BaoHaus. Pressed for time as I had to get back to a client's restaurant, I was on a mission to get some Bao's. I beat the rush and put my order in when I noticed something new and different on the menu. The Coffin Bao, essentially a larger bao stuffed with fried chicken and topped with condensed milk syrup, crushed peanuts, Taiwanese red sugar, and cilantro, a play on a chicken and waffles, if you will. To put it simply, it was absolutely unreal.
Im a sucker for any type of street food that revolves around a sandwich, and BaoHaus has that formula down pat.
